Press Release
28.01.2010 15:51:43
PRESS RELEASE To Whom it may concern On finding out today that Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin will not be reopening St Joseph's ward, I ant to take this time to say how disappointed and frustrated we are at this news, It was also stated that all theaters would be reopened from Feb, But what good is it to reopen theaters when the beds are not there for the children in the wards. This hospital is already struggling to cope with the demand from its patience, so to make it to continue again by not reopening a 25 bed ward is beyond disbelief. Yes our country is facing hard times right now, But not by the hands of our children, but by the banks and corrupt developers and i will add corrupt political bodies, So why i ask do the children of this country have to suffer by the mismanagement of others, This madness has to stop and it has to stop now, Our campaign is calling on Proff Drumm to wake up and see that children are suffering and will continue to suffer while St Josephs ward remains closed. We will continue to fight to have this ward reopened as our children need us parents to do that for them. ENDS

PRESS RELEASE issued by Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin
28.10.2009 10:31:58
STATEMENT ISSUED BY OUR LADY’S CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, CRUMLIN OLCHC 27 October 2009 What is the reason for the long waiting list for open heart surgery? There has been an increase in the national child birth rate. Consequently, more children are being born with congenital heart disease Children often require more than one operation – and due to increased success rates this requirement arises more frequently OLCHC is carrying out significantly more cardiac operations than 3 years ago A critical limiting factor is access to ICU paediatric beds which are needed for the child after surgery. All cardiac patients are prioritized on the basis of clinical need: As Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin is the tertiary centre for all patients with congenital heart disease. No distinction is made between public and private status and prioritization of surgery is determined based on clinical need. Clinical need or timing for surgery is determined by evidence based best medical practice and the optimal timing for surgery is decided by the multidisciplinary team at the weekly Joint Cardiac Conference at the hospital. What is being done to address the waiting list? Phase 1 The HSE have now committed to replacing 13 of the hospitals existing 21 ICU beds and to provide 4 additional ICU beds. These beds were identified as requiring replacement by an independent report commissioned by the HSE. This will bring the total number of ICU beds at Crumlin to 25 (Phase 1). Phase 1 of this project will be completed within 18 months. The hospital and the HSE are currently examining options to address the current cardiac waiting list service need in advance of Phase 1 of the ICU project being completed. Phase 2 The HSE have also made provision for a future expansion of 5 additional ICU beds. When this Phase 2 is implemented it will bring the total number of ICU beds at OLCHC to 30 ICU beds. ENDs

Press Release
14.10.2009 10:24:45
On a day we read CHILDREN LIVING with the chronic pain of arthritis are waiting up to 13 months for an appointment with the State’s only paediatric rheumatologist, Our campaign are disgusted to learn the CEO of the HSE Prof Brendan Drumm will be receiving a bonus of 70,000 euro. In a time when one ward and one theater remain closed in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, When waiting lists for children are rising at a dramatic rate , children’s operations are been cancelled on a weekly basis due to no beds in icu it is sicken to the core to hear bonuses of This kind being handed out to the very people who cut funding to Our Lady’s Hospital. Our Campaign demand that Prof Brendan Drumm refuses this bonus on the grounds of the current state of our health service. How can he justify accepting this bonus while our health service is crumbling around us, while children and adults alike suffer because of the state of our health service. Mary Harney stated herself recently that cuts to the cost of 800 million is going to be made to the health service next year. Yet they hand out big bonuses on a job well done, for a system that is clearly failing children and adults alike. children suffer while CEO of HSE gets a big bonus
14.10.2009 09:21:50
THE BOARD of the Health Service Executive (HSE) has approved a bonus of more than €70,000 for its chief executive Prof Brendan Drumm. The approval, understood to have been given recently, comes when the HSE is in the middle of a major cost-cutting programme and is making plans to reduce spending by up to €1.2 billion next year. The bonus payment for Prof Drumm is for 2007. While it would normally have been paid in 2008, a decision on whether to pay it was postponed consistently and only taken over the summer. The Irish Times has learned that the bonus payment amounts to just over €70,000. However, it is understood that the money has not yet been drawn down. It emerged last year that €1.4 million had been paid in performance bonuses to other senior HSE staff in respect of 2007. The HSE board has suspended consideration of performance-related awards in respect of 2008, which would normally be paid this year, following a request from the Department of Health. In a statement last night the HSE said: “The board of the HSE has approved payment of a performance award to Prof Drumm based on his performance in 2007. During 2007 activity in many community and hospitals services increased from the previous year and the HSE met its accountability requirements by delivering a balanced vote. More Children left waiting in pain.
14.10.2009 09:13:56
By Eilish O'Regan Health Correspondent Wednesday October 14 2009 CHILDREN with arthritis are at risk of life-long deformity because they must wait up to 13 months to be seen by the country's only specialist, it was revealed yesterday. Dr Orla Killeen, who is the only paediatric rheumatologist in the hospital system, described the delays -- which leave the children in severe pain -- as "horrendous and shameful". She is currently "swamped with referrals" and has a waiting list of 350 in Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin with people left queueing for a first appointment. Children should be seen in six weeks -- but even emergency cases cannot get an appointment for four months at the earliest. Dr Killeen was speaking as Arthritis Ireland launched a new campaign -- spearheaded by some of the 1,000 children who suffer the condition -- to get a second specialist appointed. She said there has been a 250pc rise in young patient referrals with arthritis in the last two-and-half years . I am appealing
29.07.2009 09:39:59
Hi everyone, As you are aware our campaign has been fighting hard to highlight the cutbacks to our children's hospital. But today our biggest challenge is to try get members of the public to stand along side us at our protests. When we had out flyers and shopping malls and schools and out in the streets, alot of people react with anger on hearing what is happening to our national children's hospital, But yet when the time and day comes for us to stand on the street and support all of our sick children, only a few do attend, Yes some people will say its hard to get people out on to the streets as they may think what good will it do, Well i will tell you what good it will do, It will show this government that we will not stand back as parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephew, grandparents, neighbors and allow the most venerable in our society OUR CHILDREN to suffer due to cutbacks to there hospital. I need to try make it as clear as i can, that the HSE will not listen to us unless we shout and shout loud. we need to get out on the street and be the voice of all the thousands of sick children in our country. This government can bail out banks and developers, but can not find a small amount of 9.6 million to put frontline services back into Our Lady's Hospital. So PLEASE i am asking you on behalf of all the children that attend this great hospital, come out and join us on our protests, we ask of only a hour of your time at each one. This government say cutbacks well we the campaign say FIGHT BACK for the sake of our children and the children of the future . Teresa Shallow

PRESS RELEASE
26.07.2009 17:45:47
PRESS RELEASE I am mailing you today on reading from a daily paper that Brian Lenihan Plans to use taxpayers money to not only bail out the banks Here in Ireland, but now to also bail out foreign investors. We have been highlighting issues of cutbacks to our lady’s children’s hospital in crumlin for a number of weeks now, so I am sure you are all aware of what is happening regarding its current situation. So to think that our government is yet again laughing in the face of sick children is nothing but scandalous. Yes I say laugh as the day they voted against putting the 9.6 million funds into the hospital they patted one another on the back and shook hands and giggled with joy to a job well done. They are handing money over to BANKS and OVER SEA INVESTORS, While children are suffering, How can they now come out and justify This outrageous act , How can they keep ignoring all the parents who are on bended knees pleading with them to help there children, These are Sick children and in the irish constitution it states the government will provide in all areas for them, But again they are clearly breaking that promise while money is flowing trough to the people who made this country in the mess it is today, and now I will state again to OVERSEAS INVESTORS. For me today is a sad day, as it is a day that clearly states without a douth in my mind that our governments policy is money before health, What is it the government is telling these children, it is clear SUFFERING LITTLE CHILDREN “who are they”, BANKERS AND INVESTORS “well hello there” Teresa Shallow 0852711401 Spokesperson Save Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Campaign.

press release
21.07.2009 12:36:27
I am mailing you today in dismay at hearing from a reliable source that Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin will be closing its out patients department for one week in August, one week in September and two weeks in December. This is once again going to cause distress to patients and parents who are fighting hard to have all services returned to Our Lady's. Prof Brendan Drumm said there was no need to make these cut backs and he would make it his duty to have all appointments arranged with out delay and to also have the operating theater reopend that was closed in may. Where is that promise we ask after hearing the news of yet more closures, this will with out douth cause pain and suffering to children who are already months on waiting lists, and for parents who had appointments for them to be cancelled. I will be highliting this issue at our protest this sat July 25th at 1pm. Regards Teresa Shallow Spokesperson Save Our Lady's Children's Hospital Campaign 0852711401

€180,000 each day for 'doing nothing' 1,000 surplus HSE staff still employed as cuts hit children
18.07.2009 11:31:52
UP to 1,000 surplus HSE staff are still being paid €180,000 a day although they have no work to do. The staff are costing an estimated €67m a year in salaries at a time when resources are so stretched that crucial health services are being slashed. Among the HSE staff targeted were around 200 of its middle managers who earn salaries of up to €83,000. Their numbers have increased from just 10 in 2000 to more than 700 now. The €67m-a-year cost contrasts sharply with the impact of swingeing cuts at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin. The hospital has been at the centre of a recent bitter row between management and HSE chief Prof Brendan Drumm. The issue of children waiting for critical operations has become central to the entire value-for-money public service debate. Plans to shed the HSE jobs have collapsed. An early retirement plan has stalled due to a dispute with unions who are concerned about the redeployment of those left behind. New figures show that just 150 of the HSE's 111,000 staff (0.1pc) have applied for the early retirement scheme, career breaks or shorter working years that were announced in the emergency Budget. And the latest figures come as it emerged that the An Bord Snip Nua report may now be published within a matter of days. There is a growing anxiety within government to get the controversial report out as fast as possible. A senior government source said: "If not Wednesday, then Thursday or Friday -- possibly. Once it goes to Cabinet, that's it. It will be presented as this is what the country needs to do and it needs strong government." Against that background the fact that there has been virtually nothing done to reduce the public service bill takes on a critical relevance. The HSE's initial plan for 1,000 voluntary redundancies was put on hold earlier this year due to the estimated €300m cost of providing payments for departing staff. The Department of Finance then announced the early retirement, shorter working year and career-break schemes from the emergency Budget last April would be rolled out instead. But health service unions decided not to co-operate with the scheme in the absence of an agreement on how staff remaining behind would be re-deployed. Both the HSE and the Department of Health have emphasised that staff must be flexible about taking on new responsibilities because staff who leave under the schemes will not be replaced. The IMPACT trade union said it wanted a national framework that would put safeguards in place for staff. "We obviously don't want a situation where someone in south Dublin is told they are being redeployed to Inishowen (in Donegal) because clearly that would be nonsensical and unfair," a spokesman said. However, IMPACT said it accepted its members would have to work harder and be more flexible. Fine Gael health spokesman Dr James Reilly that health workers had rights and should not have to make "unreasonable moves". But there could be no question of extra payments for being redeployed, he said. Labour health spokeswoman Jan O'Sullivan said there was an urgent need to engage with the unions to get the scheme up and running. "Hiding behind unions is not good enough. I firmly believe there is a need to take out the layers of management in the HSE as quickly as possible," she said. - Michael Brennan and Fionnan Sheahan Independent.ie

Information on money raised for Our lady's Children's Hospital
09.07.2009 19:24:13
Children’s Medical and Research Foundation FUNDRAISING – WHERE THE MONEY IS SPENT The Children’s Medical and Research Foundation raises money for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin and The Children’s Research Centre. Moneys granted to the Hospital are to provide supplementary equipment and other facilities to assist the Doctors and other healthcare professionals in their work and to lessen the trauma of the hospital experience for seriously ill children and their parents. Money is not provided for basic health service needs such as staffing, drugs and other operational matters. Examples of some major projects funded by the Foundation at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin in recent years or currently underway are: The Medical Tower: This is a major new building, a four storey Medical Outpatient Department providing multidisciplinary assistance on a single visit for patients and their families affected by Cancer, Cystic Fibrosis, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease and Dermatology. The advantage of this new facility is that the Physiotherapists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Dieticians and other health professionals etc. can all be scheduled and seen on a single visit to the Consultant. The National Burns Unit: Despite Crumlin’s designation as the National Centre for Burns in children, it did not have a dedicated burns unit with specialised facilities and staff, until the Musgrave Group through its SuperValu, Centra and Wholesale grocery division undertook a dedicated fundraising effort. The benefits of concentrating the patients, equipment and nursing skills in one renovated and dedicated ward are obvious. Parent and Family Accommodation: Parents obviously wish to be close to their children while in hospital. Fundraising efforts have supported a wide variety of dedicated accommodation needs – on and off the Campus. The most visible and best example is the Ronald McDonald House, largely paid for by that charity. But, it and extensive accommodation needs have been supported also by other fundraising including the Homestead Group, a Late Late Show initiative and the Foundation’s ongoing fundraising efforts. Endocrinology: Most Diabetes and Endocrine patients attend as outpatients. Consequently the facilities needed to support them have had to be expanded substantially, as evidenced by the additional storey to this dedicated building put in place by an active parents fundraising group. Again, the patient can see the various health professionals necessary on a single visit. Transitional Care Unit: A new unit, it has been constructed for children who need long term ventilator support to prepare them for transfer from a hospital environment to home. The advantage of the TCU is that children and their families are no longer exposed to the critical care and distress that is frequently part of the standard ICU in a busy hospital. In the TCU, parents can develop the skills to support their child at home. Pharmacy: Compounding and issuing of medicines no longer happens in retail pharmacies but together with advice, these are critical functions of a hospital pharmacy, particularly for children. This major renovation and expansion was completed in 2007. Confidential and separate facilities are now available to prepare medicines, and most importantly to advise patients. Air Ambulance: The fitting out and procurement of specialised life support equipment to enable an Air Corps helicopter to function as an air ambulance on a `24/7´ basis to retrieve or deliver critically ill children. Coffee Shop, Cafeteria and other Food Service Facilities: Parents and their children have to eat. The patients must have both hot and cold food, often specially prepared by dieticians and it must be delivered to the bedside. The Foundation has made a substantial investment in all aspects of Hospital food preparation and delivery. Accident and Emergency Extension: Again, with the help of Musgrave Retail Partners and others, significant extra space and facilities are being added to the Emergency Department including: neutral pressure room, neo natal resuscitation area, fast tracking capability and consultation space. Adolescent Unit: The Pre WW II design of the Hospital did not anticipate today’s adolescents and their needs. A special campaigning group fundraised for a dedicated unit with entertainment space, shower facilities and chill out areas etc. New Hospital Labs: The Foundation enabled the Hospital to bring forward purchase of a Cat 3 lab subsequently funded by the HSE. The money released will now pay for a Microbiology Unit. Many molecular lab functions have to be carried out off site in another hospital. Good diagnosis, infection control and early treatment demands an on hand lab with quick turnaround to provide the information needed in a modern hospital for immuno suppressed, CF, whooping cough and other patients. Most of the above projects cost a minimum of seven figures, some considerably more. Equipment purchases for the Consultants and various Hospital Departments by the Foundation runs to millions each year. The kids come first of course, everything from computers, video games, toys, DVD’s and every kind of distraction, including a special clown doctor service is funded by the Foundation. Research The above listing relates to the Hospital only. The Foundation also supports the Children’s Research Centre on the Hospital Campus. It believes that `Today’s research is tomorrow’s health care´ Research is fundamental to medical advances, has always had a primary role in Crumlin and is central to the Foundation’s ethos. The Foundation will spend €15m on its research programme in the years 2009 – 2011. During 2008 it renovated the Research Building, providing 50 state of the art bench spaces at a cost of €4m.

CAROLANN'S MOTHER'S SPEACH
28.06.2009 08:57:36
COPY OF CARMEL WALSH’S SPEECH FROM PROTEST JUNE 27th. Ladies and Gentlemen, We have all had a stressful few weeks with one thought on our minds from morning to night, the health and well being of our children. No one likes to have to go to the airways, newspapers or national television, but, as we thought, it was the only way to shame our present government Mary Harney and the HSE into action. On Wednesday night, Teresa called and told me we where defeated by 72 votes to 67. My heart sank to my shoes, a chill went up my spine and my stomach turned. I lay awake recalling all the faces I seen in newspapers that week,] JAMIE MRPHY, DAKOTA RUDD, DEVINN BEHAN, SARAH DORNEY, JACK MCNIFF, EMMA LACEY, CONOR COUGHLAN,EMMA DOYAL, MARIA FROM CARLOW and of course my own daughter CAROLANN. And these are only a handful who depend on Our Lady’s Hospital for sick children, and who have shared there story with us. The following day by 2 pm we learned of the backroom dealing that had taken place by a government desperate to hold onto power. Instead of admitting the wrong they had done, by passing the book and passing the blame, they are hurting innocent children and families. We all know the promises that were made and it is up to each and every one of us to ensure they are kept. Thank you
